There’s certainly some excitement to be had here but it’s also forgettable enough that when the TV schedule picks back up, you won’t really miss this one. ![]() It’s a different interpretation of the source material, with plenty of additions and omissions to distort and twist this into something that almost resembles the book but feels original enough to see where the journey takes Fogg and co.Ī few of the chapters do stand out – like episode 5 where the trio are stuck on a desert island – while other inclusions – like Bellamy’s lackluster threat – feel half-baked and add nothing to the show.Īround the World in 80 Days is worth checking out if you’re desperate for something to watch. In the end, Around the World in 80 Days is just about good enough. Without him, this show would arguably fall flatter than it does. Speaking of on the money, David Tennant brings a good deal of charisma to his character, doing his best to portray Fogg’s theatrical persona. #David tennant around the world in 80 days seriesPlot issues aside, this is an aesthetically impressive series and the location work is absolutely on the money. The music is (oddly) whimsical but works surprisingly well, despite the dark tone this one takes. Visually the show does look good and there’s some really nice set design and costume work here. It also takes way too long to warm toward Fogg, and I wouldn’t be surprised if many people turn this off before they see the positive changes in his character later on. The amount of times Abigail and Passepartout bail Fogg out of tricky situations undermines his credentials as an adventurer, especially late on when Americans gush over his achievements. And this is our protagonist we’re supposed to be rooting for. He’s a bumbling, arrogant, ill-equipped man who’s both insensitive and at times incredibly childish. Here though, Phileas Fogg is dragged through his adventure by Passepartout and Abigail. Given I read this book back when I was a kid some 25 years ago, I may be mistaken but Phileas struck me as a confident and charismatic gentleman who used his wits to get out of situations. The biggest problem with this adaptation though comes from Fogg himself. Adventures are in short supply here this is a grim, gritty tale where our trio wade through treacle to get to where they need to go. Instead of frolicking, swashbuckling adventures and exciting tales fit for the whole family, Fogg’s journeys are a mixed bag of cynical digs at Fogg’s ineptitude (more on that in a minute) or episodic explorations of flawed cultural issues of the time. Only, Bellamy (one of the gentleman from the club) tries to stop him at random points across the globe. Together, the trio travel the globe, intending to make it back to London by Christmas Eve. ![]() She documents Fogg’s journey while Fogg is accompanied by his “manservant”, a Frenchman by the name of Passepartout. Joining Fogg on his misadventures is female journalist Abigail. The story here is generally the same as the original tale, in the sense that Phileas Fogg makes a wager and tries to travel the globe in under 80 days, but the tone here is distinctly darker and more serious, with a lot more political and social messaging to boot. There’s nothing inherently awful about this adaptation (unless you’re expecting a faithful book adaptation, in which case run a mile!) but likewise, there’s nothing great either. It’s fitting then that BBC’s latest offering hits all three of these categories, eventually nestling itself somewhere in the realm of indifferent mediocrity. ![]() Over the years there have been a fair few adaptations that have been a mixed bag of the good, the bad and the ugly. Even if you’ve never read the original tale, the journey of Phileas Fogg circumnavigating the globe in 80 days is well-known. Around the World in 80 Days is one of those quintessential adventure stories that everyone has heard of. ![]() ![]() Continued abuse of our services will cause your IP address to be blocked indefinitely. ![]() All the filesystem errors above, that never affects the execution of dd because it never looks in the direction of things that are breaking as it overrides the disk, will definitely affect them. And they’re probably orders of magnitude more complex programs than dd is, and they’ve got no idea what you’re willingly pulling the carpet from underneath them. That looks about right, no? So where can this go wrong? Well, there’s just one detail: remember the part where we brought the system up, mounted / and swap, spawned init and it itself started a bunch of other daemons? Unless you took action on them, they’re still running. Process copies from one to the other until one returns an error (in this case, you’ve run the length of the whole sda) Process opens both files (which, since both files are on /dev, happens without any checks to actual on-disk file systems) Kernel passes parameters (the if, of, etc, to the the process Kernel loads the dd executable from the filesystem into memory, into a process The filesystem here is entirely fake, and it’s backed entirely by the kernel. The quotes, though, are because /dev is a special filesystem, which maps things known to the kernel as files, so that linux programs can interact with them. Now, you’re telling dd to read off a “file” named zero, which resides in the /dev mountpoint/“filesystem”, and write it’s contents to the “file” named sda on the same. So, back to dd, and let’s assume you’re doing dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda (the block size and other parameters are somewhat irrelevant here), and sda is the disk you booted from and where dd resides. Running processes can continue running, at their own peril. Sure, it’s an unrecoverable error (it’s on the active root filesystem), but it’s not critical enough to stop the whole system. But, more importantly, that is not fatal to the kernel itself. Again, you may not be able to re-launch it, but that’d be a different execution/process, which is completely independent of the first one.Īnd what about from the point of view of the operating system? The kernel will actually notice, because it does check that what’s on disk when doing certain operations (and it won’t find what it’s expected) and will error that file system out. ![]() It won’t try, so it won’t get an error, and nothing of relevance will happen to that program until it’s run it’s course and terminated. We’ve already established that the program doesn’t need it’s own executable, does it need anything else from the file system? Any other files or meta-data? If the answer is no, then it’s no problem for it at all. Then, what happens if you remove the underlying file system entirely (from the point of view of a running program)? Well, quite similar to the above, really. It would run until it terminates, and then it won’t be available to run again next time. It very likely won’t result in an error, either, unless the executable is actively looking for it’s file contents on disk (which most wouldn’t). #Knoppix wipefs command windows#By the way, this is a key difference from windows: windows will not let you delete the executable belonging to a running process, while Linux has no problem with it. Next, when the kernel finishes loading, it mounts file systems: / at the very least, maybe swap (we’ll get back to this one!) and others, and starts up init, which nowadays is systemd, and in turn that starts a multitude of daemons, like cron, sshd, etc.Įvery one of these processes being started, is likewise copied to and executed straight from memory. You can delete the kernel from disk, replace it, and it’s not a problem until the next time it’s booted. ![]() ![]() Now, Linux itself, the kernel, from the moment you boot it, will be copied and run entirely from memory. There’s a reason any sets of instructions telling you to run dd to do something are ALWAYS accompanied by a warning to make sure you’re pointing of= to the right disk. TL DR: if works if you prepare accordingly, though it may be easier to use a recovery system, or issue a low-level format secure erase command to your hard drive.įirst of all, dd (or any other utility that works the same way) has no problem writing to the very own disk it’s running from, much to the dismay (and disgrace) of some. Right, so, you CAN get it to work, without much trouble really, if you prepare for it accordingly. ![]() ![]() ![]() As an add on you could also have particular characters for parcitular scenery. Naturally as a kids' based game this doesn't have to be overly sexual, but a few local girls visiting the tavern or some warrioresses in the Xena style wouldn't go amiss. I know this is set as High Fantasy but I figure there's no harm in throwing in a few Mediaeval ideas.ġ.) Woman - Where's the women?
